Founded in 1542 over Mayan ruins of an ancient city T’ho, currently named American Capital of Culture, this title was earnt twice. Merida is the capital city of the state of Yucatan, a famous place due to the impact of an asteroid 65 million years ago causing dinosaur disappearance.

Merida is a cosmopolitan city with many museums, art galleries, restaurants and clubs, being the most important city of the entire Yucatan’s peninsula. In Yucatan, not only Spanish is spoken with a distinctive accent, but also a third of the population of the state of Yucatan speak Mayan. Cuisine in Merida is also different from the traditional Mexican food as it has been influenced by the local indigenous culture, as well as Caribbean, Mexican, European and Middle Eastern flavours.

This city can be considered as the perfect place from which to kick off exploring the Yucatan’s peninsula, Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Medical Elective

Mérida, Mexico is a great location for your Mundo Verde medical internship as the hospitals here see many patients come and go and will witness many different cases. It is also a place where you may come across some tropical diseases that you don’t regularly see back home. It’s an excellent advantage to gain new knowledge in your chosen field as you join the doctors on their rounds and shadow them daily, perhaps aiding them as well and getting some hands-on experience. It also has a lot to offer when you are not at work with its delicious fusion cuisine or beaches in the surrounding area to visit.

Our accommodation in Merida is well situated near to everything you may need, such as banks, supermarkets, and cafes, and just a short journey to your hospital placement. With pleasant decor the living areas are spacious and cozy, creating an excellent environment for you to be able to relax in. 24 hours a day, a member of the Mundo Verde team will be available.

Spanish Classes

Meridanos are well known for having a very smooth and easy accent within Mexico, this feature makes the whole Spanish learning experience an unforgettable time since you will get the most out of your Spanish classes that will be invaluable for your Medical Elective in Mexico and certainly for your spare time while you get to know the city and its people.

Cooking class in Merida

Merida is a beautiful city bursting with culture, colours and flavours. Street food is huge in Mexico so you won’t be short of quick stops to grab a bite to eat. Sometimes street food can be the most delicious around so don’t miss out. There are influences from Mayan, Mediterranean, Carribean and per-colonian cultures that have fused together into some wonderful creations.

Cuisine is a huge part of any countries culture and we want you to be as immersed as possible during your elective. Included as part of the overall price of your elective we have a cooking class for you to enjoy. You will join us shopping for the ingredients, the preparation and cooking of the dish, and then getting to eat it at the end. You will be able to prepare it for your family back home to give them a taste of Mexico from your own kitchen.

Salsa lessons in Merida

If you join us in, Mexico for your elective you will get a salsa class included. They love salsa and bachata here and you will hear it everywhere. Just like everywhere else in Latin America most people are great dancers and it comes so naturally to them. Music is everywhere and plays a huge role in the countries culture, which is why we have included it as part of your immersion in their day to day and general life here. You will learn some of the basic steps so you can head out after and give them a go by yourself. If you find you love it there are plenty of places around to take more classes or to just go and dance in the evenings.

Most relevant questions

We do not have complicated application process and remember that you are not applying for a remunerated work, this means that anyone can apply as long as they fulfill the required criteria.
Mundo Verde Elective Placements DO NOT ASK for any type of fee upon registration in any of our programmes, in order to secure your placement we ask for a deposit once your placement has been confirmed at any of our partner hospitals or clinics. This deposit will be used as a prepayment for one of your trips or excursions; this will guarantee your placement. The requested deposit once your placement has been confirmed is US$50 in all of our destinations.
If by any chance, we cannot place you at the requested programme we will locate you in a different destination if desired. This situation does not really happen, however, due to force majeure causes we would relocate you or cancel your placement, if this event would happen, your deposit would be totally refunded.
You must remember that in case you cancel due to any personal reasons then the deposit of US$50 will not be refunded.
Once you fill our enrollment online form, we will be in contact with you to start arranging your placement.
