Cusco, once the capital city of the Incas, is the earliest steadily occupied city in the Americas. In 1983, the city was chosen as a UNESCO world heritage site. The ruins of the aged Incan city became the foundation of the Spanish structures that can be seen today. As you pass through the narrow paths lined by Incan walls you get a glimpse of how life would have been for the ancient civilization. It can almost feel as if you have gone back in time.
The primary tourist area is the Plaza de Armas and the neighboring streets, with many main attractions within a few blocks. Uphill to the northeast of the Plaza de Armas is the neighborhood San Blas. Cobble stoned streets lead the way uphill to this unique little district. It is popular with foreigners and is more tranquil than the center. It also provides one of the most excellent views of the whole city.
