My name is Meredith and I am an Australian final year medical student. I completed my medical elective with Mundo Verde in Cusco, Peru in August of 2013. I had a wonderful time on this elective and would recommend this company to anyone looking at doing a placement in Peru. Pablo and his team were always available and willingly to make our placement as enjoyable as possible. This included someone meeting as at the airport when we arrived in Cusco and taking us to our accommodation to showing us around the town of Cusco and providing us with Spanish lessons. Our accommodation was centrally located in Cusco and was comfortable and homely. At our accommodation we got to meet and become close friends with other students who were also completing placements in Peru and I can honestly say that these friendships are ones that will last.
The Mundo Verde team organised many trips around the greater Cusco area for the students who were in Peru including the Southern and Sacred Valleys, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca as well as the Amazon. Each of these trips were well organised and we always felt safe and well cared for. Furthermore, Pablo was always available on his phone, any time day or night, if we needed him and he was happy for us to contact him with any concerns we may have.
With regards to the medical component of the placement, the staff at the hospital was welcoming and eager to teach the students about medical management as well as how the Peruvian Health System works. They also ensured that we enjoyed our time in Cusco by taking us to dinners as well as various treks throughout the Cusco mountainside.
Overall, this placement was a wonderful experience and allowed us to learn about the culture of Cusco and the way the health system in Peru works. Everyone strived to make our time an enjoyable and memorable one. I cannot think how this placement could have been improved and highly recommend a placement with Pablo and his team to anyone thinking about going to South America.
